The origin of today’s Laguna Niguel was the establishment of the Laguna Niguel Corporation in 1959 by Cabot, Cabot & Forbes, making it one of the very first master planned communities in California. The name "Laguna Niguel" comes from the Spanish word for lagoon, and 'nigueli' which refers to a Juaneño band Indian tribe's village that ran along Aliso Creek, ending at Aliso Beach. Laguna Niguel became the 29th city in Orange County on December 1, 1989.
This beautiful, master planned city has over one-third of its land designated to open space. This significant amount of open space is one of the key features defining the unique character and urban form of the city. Laguna Niguel has 2 community parks, 23 neighborhood parks, 3 mini-parks, 1 dog park, 2 county regional parks, 2 small county parks and the new Laguna Niguel Skate & Soccer Park. This high ratio of open land to total population makes for a very fine quality of life for the over 65,000 residents who live just minutes away from the Pacific Ocean and the fine beaches of Dana Point and Laguna Beach.
This somewhat small city of less than 15 square miles features 2 large regional parks. Aliso & Wood Canyons Regional Park and Laguna Niguel Regional Park both offer recreational activities that include wilderness, miles of hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, volleyball courts, and a fishing lake. This relatively young city with an average citizen age of around 39 years old is also affluent with six digit incomes on average. The combination of above average income and younger families coupled with vast areas to explore and play in makes for a general population that likes to work hard but values their play and relaxation time as well.
Laguna Niguel is an upscale residential community with many guard gated home owner association complexes. As you drive around the city you'll notice many opulent stone walls and entry arches to developments such as Kite Hill, Niguel West, San Joaquin Hills, Bear Brand Ranch, Marina Hills, Ocean Ranch, Coronado Pointe, South Peak, Crest de Ville, Palmilla, Rancho Niguel, Niguel Summit, Beacon Hill, El Niguel Heights, and Monarch Point. Many of these single family homes sit atop the ridges of hills and mountains, and overlook serene canyons and the Pacific Ocean.
A very “family friendly” environment along with excellent schools makes the city of Laguna Niguel quite attractive for parents, their kids, and family pets. The city is served by the Capistrano Unified School District. Click Laguna Niguel School Info on the blue sub-navigational side bar for direct school links and more information.
