Capistrano Beach is a small beach community that is part of the City of Dana Point. It is bordered by San Clemente to the south and San Juan Capistrano to the north; it actually has its own zip code (92624). “Capo Beach”, as it is often referred to by locals is one of the few remaining “beach towns” in Orange County. It has avoided much of the commercialization of the surrounding areas, and remains a unique and charming place with a “small town” atmosphere.
Looking south from Doheny Beach in Dana Point to Capistrano Beach with the rolling hills, sandy beaches and blue ocean that seem to stretch forever, it’s not hard to understand why locals think this special section of the Orange County coastline is best kept unpublicized. Being further away from the big theme park draws of North Orange County, this relatively unknown South County community gets much less traffic from tourists visiting Southern California. The population is approximately 7,500 residents that live in an area that is 1.53 square miles in size.
Capistrano Beach Park was opened to the public in 1980 as the result of an agreement and General Development Plan between the Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks District and the Jack G. Raub Company. Included in that plan were are variety of amenities to make the beach more user friendly. The Park boats 11.25 acres of scenic sandy beaches that afford visitors and locals the opportunities for swimming, surfing, kayaking, fishing and many other beach activities. The sand is perfect for volleyball and there are 7 beach courts, there is a full size outdoor basketball court with lighting as well. During the summer months, a concession building offers fishing gear rental and sales, food and beverages, and beach supplies. There are also surf boards, roller blades and bicycles available for rent. Public restrooms, outside showers, picnic tables, and fire rings make this well maintained beach park a wonderful place to spend a summer day with your family and friends.
Homes range in size from beach cottages to some of the finest oceanfront real estate along the Orange Coast. Many multi-million dollar residences can be found in the area, with some sitting atop the 80 foot high bluff that overlooks Coast Highway and Capistrano Beach Park below. Several celebrities own custom homes on Beach Road which is a private oceanfront community that is located only a few yards from the surf, and is one of the few places in Orange County where you can actually own a section of the beach.
Not all residences in Capistrano Beach are luxury homes; there are many mid-priced condominiums, town homes, and single family homes a little further inland. The street atop the bluff is called Camino Capistrano, which in the 1700’s was part of the old Mission route, running from Southern to Northern California, connecting the California Missions.
The community is served by the Capistrano Unified School District (click Capistrano Beach School Info located on the blue sub-navigational side bar for direct local school links and more information).
