The community of Laguna Beach is the second oldest city in Southern Orange County. Laguna Beach was incorporated as a General Law City in 1927 and has experienced a slow but steady population growth since that time.
In the early history of Laguna Beach, many artists and counterculture activists moved from nearby Los Angeles and resided in charming cottages along the Laguna hillsides. Today only a few artists remain, as the town has become one of the wealthiest places in North America (those charming cottages, many of which are smaller than 1,300 square feet in interior size can sell for as much as a million dollars or more in today’s market depending on their location).
There is a wide variety of residences in Laguna Beach including, custom homes, vintage beach cottages, multi-level condominium complexes, and one-of-a-kind water front estates. An eclectic mix of home styles lines the bluffs above the sandy coves along the seven mile, scenic coastline of this world famous city. The land in Laguna Beach rises quickly from the shoreline into the hills and canyons of the San Juan Hills. A blanket of ocean-view homes covers the canyons and ridges that tower more than 1,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Close proximity to the ocean coupled with a fairly rapid rise in the natural terrain makes for some of the most spectacular ocean vistas and sunset views you will find anywhere!
Tourists have been flocking to this little piece of paradise to enjoy the small-town charm and incredible scenery for 100 years. During the summer, several million visitors from all over the world are drawn to Laguna Beach for its picturesque beaches, numerous art festivals and Laguna Art Museum. The famous "Pageant of the Masters" and the Laguna Beach film festival are popular events as well. The Laguna Play House, founded in 1920 is the oldest continuously operating theater company on the west coast.
Laguna's village scale shopping district, bluff top walkways and tram system create a pedestrian environment and ambiance which is very unique in Southern California. Throughout the village area and along Pacific Coast Highway you will find many fine restaurants and quick-stop eateries. There are numerous art galleries where you can purchase everything from affordable prints to original works of art from world renowned artists. Many distinctive retail shops offer their goods for viewing along the pedestrian walking paths that wind throughout the downtown village area.
Laguna Beach is 9.1 square miles in size and the current population is approximately 25,000 residents. The city is served by the Laguna Beach Unified School District (click Laguna Beach School Info on the blue sub-navigational side bar for direct school links and more information).
