Corona del Mar (which stands for “Crown of the Sea” in Spanish) is a charming seaside community that is as beautiful as its name. Nestled on the seaward face of the San Joaquin Hills and fronting the Pacific Ocean, Corona del Mar ranges along a bluff at the south end of Newport Beach. The community is home to some of the most desirable neighborhoods in all of South Orange County
Corona del Mar has no locally administered municipal government, but receives all municipal level services from the city of Newport Beach, and has it's own representative to the Newport Beach City Council. Even though it is part of the incorporated city of Newport Beach the post office accepts a mailing address of Corona del Mar for those residents living within the 92625 zip code. The community also has its own Chamber of Commerce.
Original plans for Corona del Mar at the turn of the 20th century were as a vacation destination. On June 29, 1904 George Hart signed an agreement with the Irvine Ranch for the purchase of a 706 acre corner of land for summer cottages. His concept and vision quickly changed in 1904 when visitors came to play and would not leave so perfect a spot. Up until the late 1920’s, Corona del Mar was reached from the peninsula by small boat at high tide, or by a muddy dirt road that crossed the Irvine Ranch. The opening of Pacific Coast Highway in 1926 lead to a period of slow growth which did not accelerate until after World War II.
Many of the streets in Corona del Mar are named after flowers, and they run in alphabetical order from Acacia to Poppy, each lined with a variety of trees. Even the landmark Goldenrod Footbridge built in 1928 has a beautiful display of colorful flowers along both sides of its 243 foot long arched structure. The Sherman Library and Gardens located on PCH is open to the public and offers tours of beautiful flower and plant gardens. Roger's Gardens located a few blocks north is one of America's most beautiful Home & Garden stores. In their 'Holiday Shop" you will find one of the largest selections of fine Christmas decor and handmade ornaments for sale anywhere!
Pacific Coast Highway runs through the downtown Village area which offers a unique section of shopping and fine restaurants. Visitors and locals alike enjoy hanging out and window shopping along PCH where you will find trendy shops, art galleries, design studios, antique stores, surf shops, and other fun eateries.
Corona del Mar is also well known for its beautiful beaches that look as if they came right out of a movie set. Corona del Mar State Beach is a half-mile long sandy beach that is framed by natural cliffs and a long rock jetty that forms the entrance to Newport Harbor. Little Corona del Mar Beach is smaller in size and narrower than the main beach but offers easy access to the water and is a fun place where kids delight in playing on the wet sand and exploring nearby tide pools.
Residential real estate in Corona del Mar ranges in size from small beach cottages to multi-million dollar oceanfront estates. There are luxurious, multi-level condominium complexes overlooking the Newport Harbor and multi-residence properties that offer income potential.
