Welcome To My Newport Harbor Information Page
Newport Harbor is one of the largest small boat harbors in the U.S. and it is considered by many to be one of the finest small boat harbors in the world. The Harbor and its miles of surrounding shoreline are truly a place of beauty and scenic wonder! Two rock formed jetties stand as guard against the encroaching sea and two main channels join and converge toward the harbor mouth. Over 9,000 boats of all types and sizes are berthed in this well protected, 21 square mile harbor.
Newport Harbor is as functional as it is beautiful. Boat slips line much of the shoreline and mid channel anchorage is also available. All sizes of recreational and commercial boats can be accommodated, from the smallest of rowboats to large luxury yachts. Private homes, from small beach cottages to large bay front estates follow the harbor's contour.
Balboa Island is the largest and most-visitor friendly of the seven islands located within the Harbor. This charming and delightful island is reached by the only functioning auto ferry in California (a small Three-car Ferryboat) or via a short two-lane bridge from Jamboree Road and Pacific Coast Highway. Marine and Agate Avenues make up the commercial stretch with an array of cafés, locally owned shops and boutiques, fine restaurants and the famous sweet treat the “Balboa Bar” a decadent vanilla-ice cream bar dipped in chocolate and smothered with nuts or sprinkles, which originated on this very island.
The six other islands: Collins, Little Balboa Island, Lido Isle, Linda Isle, Harbor Island and Bay Island, are comprised of some of the most expensive real estate in the country. The best way to tour the seven unique islands of Newport Beach is on a 45-minute guided Harbor Cruise, or you can charter a quiet Duffy electric boat for a self-guided tour (contact me for more info). If you’re feeling really adventurous, kayak your way through each inlet for a different prospective, and get some good heart-pounding exercise as well.
During the holidays, you can watch impressive multi-million dollar yachts parade around the harbor and around each island during the famed Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, celebrating 101 years in 2009.
Newport Harbor was created naturally. In 1825, heavy flooding changed the course of the Santa Ana River. It began emptying into the sea in the area now known as West Newport. Sand carried down coast by the prevailing currents and by the river during the rainy season, began to build up into the peninsula which now forms the outer perimeter of Newport Harbor. By 1857 the peninsula had spread to half its present length. In 1861 another great flood started the silt deposits that later became small islands in Newport Bay.
During the 1920's and 1930's many harbor improvements were made. Involvement by the City of Newport Beach brought about the creation of the west jetty. Matching federal and local funds were used for further improvements. In 1933, local bonds were passed and the Orange County Harbor District was created to implement the harbor project. Work started in December 1934 and opening celebrations were held on May 26, 1936. President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated the ceremony by pressing a telegraph key on his White House desk and transmitting a radio signal to the Coast Guard Cutter "Hermes" in Newport Bay.
Because Newport Beach offers such a variety of coastal locations, (each with their own distinct terrain), I have divided the City into 3 main sections on this website for ease of use and for a better understanding of these different areas. Newport Beach includes all mainland, back bay and West Newport communities. Newport Harbor includes all harbor front communities along with the Islands and Isle's within the bay. Balboa Peninsula includes all property that is located on the peninsula.
